Enjoying Burgundy in Iceland August 29th, 2019

I have just returned from a week on the north coast of Iceland where they have magical scenery, magnificent horses and some great natural geothermal hot tubs. But no vineyards, and I did not expect to find much Burgundy in this rural idyll, so I brought a few things with us: nothing grand but a magnum of Pierre Guillemot’s 2017 Savigny-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes and a bottle of Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s 2007 Monthelie Les Duresses certainly hit the spot. By the way, since returning, I have discovered that quite a few leading domaines do indeed export to Iceland.

In the meantime I have been tidying up some tasting reports resulting from a week’s symposium centred on the Hill of Corton. Wee went to many of the key domaines and enjoyed some exciting mini-verticals – including one of almost every vintage produced to date of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Corton. This, a mini-vertical of Faiveley’s Clos des Cortons Faiveley, and a general report of some other highlights of the week have now been uploaded to the site.

In the next few days I shall be visiting a few vineyards and vignerons to see how everything is shaping up for the 2019 vintage. The annual excitement is almost with us once again!
